This is an initiative developed in partnership with ANP|WWF (Associa\u00e7\u00e3o Natureza Portugal | World Wide Fund For Nature) and MARE \u2013 Center for Marine and Environmental Sciences with ISPA (University Institute of Psychological, Social and Life Sciences), aiming to understand spatial and seasonal patterns of use of the river estuary by cetaceans, such as the common dolphin. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The &#8220;Dolphins in the Tagus&#8221; Observatory is installed at the Maritime Traffic and Security Coordination and Control Center of the Port of Lisbon (VTS Tower), in Alg\u00e9s, a privileged place to detect dolphins that visit the estuary.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"685\" src=\"https:\/\/lisbonsightsailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Observatorio-de-Golfinhos-Torre-VTS.jpg\" alt=\"Dolphin Observatory - VTS Tower\" class=\"wp-image-43788\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lisbonsightsailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Observatorio-de-Golfinhos-Torre-VTS.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/lisbonsightsailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Observatorio-de-Golfinhos-Torre-VTS-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lisbonsightsailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Observatorio-de-Golfinhos-Torre-VTS-768x514.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">VTS Tower also becomes an Observatory for Dolphins on the Tagus River<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has a team of researchers and volunteers trained in marine observation and scientific recording, who continuously observe the lower Tagus Estuary area in search of cetaceans, also recording human activities, atmospheric conditions, among other factors. The collected information will serve for the development of academic theses, scientific articles and other works of scientific dissemination, as well as to serve as a basis for a wider dissemination to the general public. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-observar-com-varios-meios\">Observe with various supports<\/h2>\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the terrace of the VTS Tower there is an observation post with binoculars that allow to observe the river from the April 25th Bridge and a telescope that provides a more detailed view, in particular of the area closest to the south bank. On a tripod, a video camera is installed that also records the sightings. <br\/><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/lisbonsightsailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Posto-de-Observacao-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"The observation post at the VTS Tower\" class=\"wp-image-43790\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lisbonsightsailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Posto-de-Observacao-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/lisbonsightsailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Posto-de-Observacao-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lisbonsightsailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Posto-de-Observacao-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lisbonsightsailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Posto-de-Observacao.jpg 1299w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The observation post <br\/>Source: Time Out<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The observation is complemented with the help of acoustic recordings, obtained through a sensor\/recorder installed underwater (which at the surface is identified by a green buoy), next to the VTS Tower so that it is possible to hear the vocalizations of the mammals (each dolphin has a unique vocalization, which allows its identification).<br\/>The project also has a closer look component, with &#8220;sea outings&#8221; for photographic recording. Through the dorsal fins it is also possible to tell if they are always the same dolphins, as it is almost like a fingerprint. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ha-cada-vez-mais-golfinhos-no-tejo\">There are more and more dolphins in the Tagus<\/h2>\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the years, these friendly and intelligent mammals have appeared frequently in the area, but little is known about them. What species swim in the Tagus? Are they always the same groups? What do they come here to do? How many are there?
