For the ships that came from the Mediterranean to the countries further north in Europe, the natural bay of the Tagus estuary provided the first safe haven they found.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths and Moors are just a few examples of the peoples who recognized the strategic importance of the River Tagus. As a result, each left their mark on the region, contributing to the rich cultural tapestry that characterizes the area around Lisbon. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this article, we&#8217;ll explore various facts about the Tagus River in Portugal, its curiosities and the importance it has played over the centuries.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:49px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-origem-e-o-percurso-do-rio-tejo\">The origin and course of the Tagus River<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It rises in the Albarracim mountains, in the region of Aragon, Spain, at an altitude of 1,593 meters. The Tagus, in Latin <em>Tagus<\/em>, is the longest river in the Iberian Peninsula. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The river crosses Spanish Extremadura before entering Portuguese territory. In other words, along its course, it passes through various Spanish towns and cities, such as Toledo, Aranjuez and Talavera de la Reina. In Portugal, the River Tagus passes through Abrantes, Santar\u00e9m, Vila Franca de Xira, Lisbon and many other cities.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The course of the River Tagus in Portugal is marked by stunning landscapes, valleys and even several islands. The most famous is the island of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitportugal.com\/pt-pt\/content\/castelo-de-almourol\">Almourol Castle<\/a>. This medieval fortification has become one of the most beautiful symbols. In addition, the Tagus estuary played a crucial role in the great Portuguese Discoveries. It was from Lisbon that the carracks and caravels set sail, leading the great Portuguese maritime adventures.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the 15th century, Portugal was at the height of its Age of Discoveries. Under the command of great navigators such as Vasco da Gama, Fern\u00e3o de Magalh\u00e3es or Pedro Alvares Cabral, Portuguese vessels set sail from the Tagus estuary towards new sea routes, treasures and knowledge. These expeditions were undeniably responsible for the beginning of globalization.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:49px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-o-rio-tejo-e-as-suas-curiosidades\">The River Tagus and its curiosities<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At approximately 1,100 kilometers long, the River Tagus has many stories to tell. It holds a series of curiosities that add a special touch to its history. Here are some of them:  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-o-ouro-do-tejo\">The gold of the Tagus<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to some <a href=\"https:\/\/osaldahistoria.blogs.sapo.pt\/instantaneos-81-o-purissimo-ouro-do-78347\">legends and historical accounts<\/a>, the River Tagus was a source of gold. They say that D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, paid a pension to the pope using gold taken from the Tagus. In addition, Kings D. Dinis and D. Jo\u00e3o III had their scepters made with gold from the river sands. Although this wealth is no longer found today, the story of the Tagus gold adds a magical element to its journey.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-onda-do-terramoto-de-1755\">The wave of the 1755 earthquake<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On November 1, 1755, a devastating earthquake struck the lower part of Lisbon and other areas along the River Tagus. The wave generated by the earthquake \u2013 reports indicate it was around 15 meters high \u2013 surged up the river and flooded the city, causing unprecedented destruction. After the floods came fires, disease and famine. This tragic event left a deep mark on the history and memory of the Portuguese people.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-as-pontes-que-cruzam-o-tejo\">The bridges that cross the Tagus<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the years, two bridges have been built crossing the River Tagus in Lisbon. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lisbonsightsailing.com\/en\/vistas\/25-abril-bridge\/\">25 de Abril Bridge<\/a>, inaugurated in 1966, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/lisbonsightsailing.com\/en\/vistas\/vasco-da-gama-bridge\/\">Vasco da Gama Bridge<\/a>, inaugurated in 1998. The 25 de Abril Bridge, one of the largest suspension bridges in Europe, connects Lisbon to Almada, while the Vasco da Gama Bridge connects Lisbon to Alcochete, Moita and Montijo. These bridges are important structures and facilitate mobility in the region.     <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-lenda-do-seu-nome\">The legend of its name<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">  According to <a href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tib%C3%A9rio_C%C3%A1cio_Asc%C3%B4nio_S%C3%ADlio_It%C3%A1lico\">Silius Italicus<\/a>, the river was initially called Tago \u2013 the name of an Iberian king who was cruelly murdered by Hasdrubal (a Carthaginian general).
