The Syone Sailing Team<\/a>, led by Nuno Neves<\/strong>, has gained prominence in national and international competitions, combining talent, dedication, and passion for the sea. <\/p>\n\n

In this interview, Nuno Neves shares the vision of leadership and high performance that drives the project.<\/p>\n\n

<\/div>\n\n

1. Origins and the Long-Term Partnership<\/h2>\n\n

<\/p>\n\n

The Syone Sailing Team was founded as a result of an agreement with Syone<\/a>, an IT company that shared the project’s vision and values. Nuno Neves highlights the strength of this alliance: “The first contract lasted two years, but our relationship has now lasted twelve<\/strong>.” The project was born with the ambition to compete and win at the highest level. Although they recognised the initial distance to the top, their conviction was strong: “We knew we were far from that level, but we were convinced that if we wanted it enough, it would only be a matter of time before we got there.” <\/p>\n\n

The moment when sailing became a professional dedication was after the contract was formalised. Nuno reports that, from that point on, he began to “see sailing as a central activity in my life<\/strong>.” The commitment to increasing goals, driven by initial results, allowed for the constant evolution of the project. <\/p>\n\n

Nuno mentions the names of great sailors who were great inspirations to him, such as Torvar Mirsky and Adam Minoprio. He adds that he learned a lot from them and that \u201ceven today I still apply some of their methods with my team\u201d. <\/p>\n\n

2. Challenges, Mindset, and Resilience<\/h2>\n\n

<\/p>\n\n

In the beginning, Nuno Neves identified the management of the project itself as a major challenge. However, the biggest practical obstacle was budget constraints, which put the team at a disadvantage compared to opponents with better equipment. Over time, this reality became a motivation. His philosophy is clear: “Knowing that I have to be faster and more disciplined<\/strong> compensates for any technical disadvantage.” <\/p>\n\n

Asked about giving up, Nuno says: “Giving up, no. But I’ve been demotivated many times.” However, demotivation is used as a motor: “I use demotivation as fuel<\/strong>.” It is in the most difficult moments that creativity emerges, aligned with his maxim: “As I usually say: there is a solution for everything<\/strong>.” <\/p>\n\n

For Nuno, managing adrenaline is positive: “For me, pressure and adrenaline are the most fun part<\/strong>,” because they mean you are competing for something relevant, maintaining focus. In other words, he is able to stay concentrated during a 10-hour regatta. <\/p>\n\n

The most demanding event was the European Championship<\/a> in August 2025, an intense five-day regatta that required constant resolution of technical problems and faced high temperatures. Nuno described it as, “without a doubt, a great test of endurance and resilience<\/strong>.” <\/p>\n\n

3. Leadership and Team Dynamics<\/h2>\n\n

<\/p>\n\n

Team dynamics are a decisive factor in performance. Nuno explains its relevance through the metaphor of a pyramid: “Dividing a pyramid into 3, the team’s performance is the base.<\/strong> Then come the tactical choices during the regatta, and the top of the pyramid, and least important, is the boat’s performance and its optimization.” <\/p>\n\n

As the person responsible for the project and leader, in addition to being at the helm, Nuno recognizes the complexity of managing nine people with different personalities. The method for maintaining group cohesion is through example: “I would say that the best way to maintain motivation and group cohesion is through example<\/strong>.” His persistence inspires the team, generating a positive cycle: “This dedication on their part ends up generating new motivation in me, creating a loop of mutual help<\/strong> and that is essentially the engine of the project.” <\/p>\n\n

The competition routine includes a briefing<\/strong> before each regatta to adjust roles and motivate the crew. After the regatta, the learning and improvement process is immediate, with a debriefing<\/strong> to “correct flaws” and tactical preparation for the next regatta. <\/p>\n\n

4. Significant Achievements and Future Goals<\/h2>\n\n

<\/p>\n\n

One of the proudest moments was the acquisition of the latest boat, a more competitive model, which represented an “important milestone, an incredible level that the project reached<\/strong>.” This investment was quickly rewarded with the conquest of the first National Championship, “the first of a sequence of three consecutive titles<\/strong>.” Nuno emphasizes that “You never forget the first one, and it was also confirmation that all the dedication and persistence had been worth it.”<\/p>\n\n

The most unexpected victory was at the Prince of Asturias Trophy in Baiona in 2023. The team set off “without great expectations, especially since we had never won an international regatta<\/strong>,” but managed to win the trophy, becoming “one of the highest moments of the project<\/strong> so far.” <\/p>\n\n

The ambition to evolve is constant, even if it involves changing equipment: “We are already on our fourth boat in twelve years<\/strong>, which shows the constant desire to improve.” The next big goal is “to win an international event again and renew the National Champion title,” with a focus on “permanent consistency”<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

5. The Personal Helm: Balance and Curiosities<\/h2>\n\n

<\/p>\n\n

Nuno Neves’ dedication to high-level competition sometimes implies a challenge in the balance between personal and professional life<\/strong>. The sailor admits that this balance was not always possible, remembering the preparation for the ORC Europeans in Palma<\/strong>: “It was a time when my head was totally focused on preparing for this race.” He ended up putting “everything else in the background,” but highlights the family support: “The family understood and supported. They know that when I want something very much, I work for it.” This is his perspective on priority management<\/strong>: “Maybe all this is part of that balance, it’s just that sometimes the scales tip more to one side.” <\/p>\n\n

When he is not on board, the focus on improvement does not disappear, as “normally when I’m not on board, I’m thinking about how to optimize the boat<\/strong> to be more competitive.” However, there is life beyond regattas<\/strong>; Nuno likes to be with family<\/strong>, especially since he recently became a father. Other interests include following cryptocurrency market news, driving in “sport mode,” and making home improvements, as well as snorkeling<\/em> and skiing. <\/p>\n\n

6. School of Life and Final Message<\/h2>\n\n

<\/p>\n\n

Nuno Neves advises young people to see sailing as a “school of life,” where they develop personally and sportingly. His advice is to stay curious, disciplined, and persistent<\/strong>, as the results will appear. <\/p>\n\n

Regarding the evolution of the sport, Nuno defends transparency and the quality of competitions. “I have a maxim: the winner must always be a fair winner<\/strong>.” To this end, it is necessary for the calculation system to be fair and the events well-organized, raising the quality of the sport in Portugal and creating a “positive cycle” with stronger clubs, better events, and greater business involvement. <\/p>\n\n

For future athletes, the final message is one of resilience and adaptation: “At sea, as in life, the wind doesn’t always blow in our favor<\/strong>. You have to adjust the sails and head for a safe harbor<\/strong>.” <\/p>\n\n
