Located in the historic center of Lisbon, Ribeira das Naus <\/strong>is now one of the city’s main tourist attractions, valued for its privileged location and rich history. Completely destroyed by the 1755 earthquake, it was rebuilt as part of the Baixa Pombalina plan and maintained its connection to the naval world until the 20th century. <\/p>\n\n

After decades as a road, the area was rehabilitated in 2014 and transformed into a public space next to the Tagus River, returning the river to pedestrians and the city.<\/p>\n\n

The origin of the name “Ribeira das Naus<\/a>” comes from the period when the place was used as a shipyard where ships, or naus, were built and maintained. Currently, Ribeira das Naus is a popular place for walks along the Tagus River, where visitors can admire the beautiful landscape of the city and river. <\/p>\n\n

In Ribeira das Naus, many of the ships that participated both in the Portuguese Discoveries and in the commercial routes later developed were produced. It was the largest naval shipyard in the Portuguese Empire and served as a model for the others that were established overseas. <\/p>\n\n

Ribeira das Naus combines leisure and history in a single space. The large sloping lawn is ideal for resting or having picnics, while the stone staircase, inspired by the old ship launch ramps, pays tribute to the site’s naval past. Although it looks like an urban beach, swimming in the Tagus is prohibited due to currents and maritime traffic, but it is possible to dip your feet or simply enjoy the view in the sun. <\/p>\n\n

Along Ribeira das Naus, there are several terraces and kiosks offering refreshing drinks and snacks. Take the opportunity to try a traditional ginjinha or a pastel de nata. <\/p>\n\n
