In the 16th century, during the reign of D. Jo\u00e3o III, the construction of the Fort began. Miguel Arruda is responsible for the construction of this work, being one of the most famous architects of the time.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, the Fort has been expanded over the centuries, thanks to its strategic position, considered of great importance for the defense of the entrance to the Tagus. Juli\u00e3o functioned, from 1802 onwards, as an educational college, for the children of the soldiers of the Artillery Regiment of the Court, installed there \u2013 the genesis of the Military College.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like other fortifications, the Fort of S\u00e3o Juli\u00e3o da Barra also served as a military and political prison. The case of General Gomes Freire de Andrade was famous, who was detained in S\u00e3o Juli\u00e3o da Barra and was executed in the land adjacent to the fortification. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"669\" src=\"https:\/\/lisbonsightsailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/lisbon-sight-sailing-forte-sao-juliao-da-barra-2.jpg\" alt=\"Torre beach, with the Fort of S. Juli\u00e3o da Barra<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Decommissioned from its defensive function in 1947, it began to be used, from 1951 onwards, for new state functions and for hosting political events. Here, among others, General Eisenhower and Field Marshal Montgomery were stationed. In July 1957, the fort was classified as a &#8211; Property of Public Interest &#8211; and is currently under the supervision of the Ministry of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portugal.gov.pt\/pt\/gc23\/area-de-governo\/defesa-nacional\">National Defense<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today it is the official residence of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defesa.gov.pt\/pt\/defesa\/organizacao\/membrosgov\/Paginas\/MDN.aspx\">Portuguese Minister of Defense<\/a>; nevertheless, it is a place where cultural initiatives regularly take place.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is worth discovering the history protected by the moats and bastions at the entrance to the city of <a href=\"https:\/\/lisbonsightsailing.com\/lisboa-e-o-melhor-destino-mundial-para-city-break\/\">Lisbon<\/a> and enjoying the impressive panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Fort of S\u00e3o Juli\u00e3o da Barra is a historical and cultural monument located between two of the main beaches on the Estoril line, Torre beach and Carcavelos beach.
