L\u2019origine du mot est incertaine, la th\u00e9orie la plus r\u00e9pandue provenant des Anglais lorsqu\u2019ils se r\u00e9f\u00e9raient au c\u00f4t\u00e9 o\u00f9 se trouvait la terre (<em>Port<\/em>) en descendant l\u2019oc\u00e9an Atlantique vers le sud. Au Portugal, l\u2019adaptation a \u00e9t\u00e9 le <em>Bom Bordo<\/em>, car c\u2019\u00e9tait le c\u00f4t\u00e9 du bateau o\u00f9 se trouvaient la terre ainsi que les ports s\u00fbrs et cartographi\u00e9s lors de la navigation le long de la c\u00f4te africaine.
