Onboard Experience & Comfort
Is it possible to swim in the Tagus River during the boat tour?
No, it is not possible to dive in the Tagus River. However, depending on the duration of the tour and the tide conditions, we can sail towards the Atlantic Ocean and make stops for swimming. Generally, in the calmer areas, near Caxias or Oeiras, it is possible to dive safely.
Swimwear is useful, especially for the Party & Sail, Classical Barbecue and Taste the Sea.
What clothes and shoes should I wear for a boat tour in Lisbon?
We recommend comfortable clothing appropriate for the time of year/time of day and flat shoes, preferably with rubber soles (sailing shoes or sneakers).
In summer, sunglasses and sunscreen. In the colder months, we recommend a jacket for greater comfort, as the temperature on the river is always cooler than on land, especially at sunset.
The swimsuit can also be useful in this experiences Party & Sail, Classical Barbecue and Taste the Sea.
Do I have to help with the sailing maneuvers or do any physical work?
No, your role is to relax, have fun, and enjoy the views. Our professional crew takes care of all navigation maneuvers (hoisting the sails, sailing, mooring, for example). However, if you are curious and want to participate, we are available to teach you how the boat works, but this is entirely optional.
Can I drive the boat or take the helm during the tour?
Yes, we love it when customers want to get involved! Under the watchful eye of our skipper and if sailing conditions allow, we invite you to take the helm and experience the thrill of steering a boat on the Tagus River. It’s a great opportunity to take photos 😉
Is previous sailing experience necessary to take a tour?
No, no previous experience or nautical knowledge is necessary. Our tours are designed for everyone, from beginners to experienced sailors. Before departure, the skipper will give a brief safety briefing to ensure you feel completely comfortable on board.
What language is spoken during the tour?
Our entire crew speaks fluent Portuguese, English, and Spanish. Our skippers are locals from Lisbon and love to share the city’s history in these languages. For private groups requiring German, French, or Italian, we can include a dedicated guide upon prior request. Simply contact us here to arrange this.
Will I feel seasick during the boat trip on the River Tagus?
It is very rare to feel seasick on our trips, as we sail on the calm waters of the River Tagus, rather than on the open sea. The stability of our sailing boats, catamarans and yachts ensures a smooth and very pleasant voyage. However, if you are prone to seasickness, we recommend that you eat something light before boarding and stay on the outside deck, where the breeze helps to prevent any discomfort.
You should avoid drinking milk and milk products as well as alcoholic beverages in excess. Some people take medicine to avoid getting seasick. Ask a pharmacist.

Please contact us before booking so we can recommend the most suitable and comfortable boat for your specific needs.

Yes, safety is our top priority. Our boats undergo rigorous and regular maintenance, and the crew consists of professional and experienced skippers with mandatory maritime certification. The tours take place on the calm waters of the Tagus River, minimizing any risk.
We also provide life jackets for children and adults which you may use during the trip.
And to reduce the likelihood of accidents we will explain to you the safety rules and show you the emergency exits before the start of the trip 🙂
Are passengers covered by insurance during the boat trip?
Yes, Lisbon Sight Sailing has mandatory Civil Liability and Personal Accident insurance for all passengers on board. You don’t need to worry about insurance documentation—just enjoy the experience.
Can the boat capsize or sink during the tour?
The Titanic was unsinkable. The Costa Concordia would never capsize… So yes, ships can sink.
However, as we normally sail in the calm and sheltered waters of the Tagus River and not in the open sea, this probability is even lower. The risk of the boat capsizing or sinking is practically nil. Our sailboats and catamarans are built with keels and/or hulls that ensure high stability and are designed to withstand sea conditions.
What happens if there is not enough wind for the sailboat to sail?
The tour will take place regardless, as all our sailboats are equipped with an auxiliary motor. The motor is used whenever there is insufficient wind or for safety maneuvers and docking. The tour will never be interrupted due to lack of wind.
What happens if there is inclement weather (heavy rain or wind) on the day of my reservation?
“There is no bad weather. But there are good and bad clothes”, according to a Swedish proverb. So, we’re covered. If necessary we have a rain shelter at your disposal.
Safety is our priority. Therefore, if weather conditions are considered dangerous by the skipper (strong winds or rough seas), the tour will be canceled. In such cases, we guarantee free rescheduling or a full refund of the amount paid. Light rain is not a reason for cancellation.

Yes, regattas are one of the best team-building activities you can do on the Tagus River.
This is a competition between boats, with the aim of completing a course in the shortest possible time, making efficient use of the strength of the wind and the setting of the sails. The course is marked out by buoys and supervised by a committee responsible for the safety and organization of the event. The race ends when the boats cross the finish line, defined by a buoy and a committee boat, which records each sailboat’s time.
The real reward of the regatta lies in the teamwork and the satisfaction of having lived an enriching experience with your colleagues, regardless of the outcome of the competition.
